Retail

Today, retail trade is one of most actively developing market segments. However, in spite of the explosive growth, the segment is essentially dominated by comparatively small regional companies. Large retail chains have a market share of no more than 20%. This means that a bigger part of the assets consolidation processes, mergers and acquisitions are still ahead of the branch. This also indicates that in the future the structure of the sector’s companies will become more complex and “multi-format” since each of these companies, aiming at reaching the biggest number of buyers possible, will be actively expanding its geographical presence and also offer to clients. The victory in the race for competitive advantages and, ultimately, in the fight for each new buyer, depends directly on the effectiveness of the retail chain’s work. Overall effectiveness is determined by a number of factors, including how well the business processes are established and if they are easily reproduced (this allows replicating the business without significant additional expenses), as well as the effective support of these processes by the IT-infrastructure.

Recently, the requirements of the retail companies to the IT-systems have become considerably more complicated: particularly, the needs for an effective set of instruments for managerial accounting; for possibility of definition, modification, and tracking of the key effectiveness measures; for possibility of planning and forecasting of consumer demand; and for increasing clients’ loyalty – have risen. Because of the specific character of the business, the retail trade companies do not longer identify IT-systems only to “classical” ERP-systems. However, the understanding that they are not limited to standard functions (management of product groups, etc.) has appeared in Russia just now. The following systems are among those that have become relevant today: the warehouse management systems (WMS), HR management, business analysis, and clients relationships management (CRM) systems.
